Former Zambian minister killed in a raid on the opposition leader's home

Mutotwe Kafwaya, 49, a former Zambian transport minister who had become an opposition member of parliament, was killed on 14 August during a joint security-forces raid on the home of opposition leader Brian Mundubile, a day after the presidential election. Police said officers came under fire during the operation and returned it, fatally wounding a man later identified as Kafwaya. Eleven people were arrested, and authorities accused Mundubile's party of "militia activity" and storing weapons — allegations Mundubile, who has gone into hiding, called "total fabrications." Official results gave incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema a second term with about 60 per cent of the vote to Mundubile's 38 per cent. The opposition has rejected the outcome and said it will challenge the count in court.
