Iran's president meets Putin at a regional summit as the US ceasefire frays

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Russian President Vladimir Putin on 1 September on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, days after a renewed round of US strikes on targets near Iran. The ceasefire agreed between Washington and Tehran in April remains formally in place but, in President Trump's own words, on "life support." There have been no direct talks on ending the conflict since negotiations in Islamabad in April broke up without agreement over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear programme.
