US strikes near the Strait of Hormuz draw Iranian drone and missile fire at Gulf bases
Filed
The US military said it completed a round of strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz on 1 September, and President Trump warned of further escalation if Tehran responded. Air-raid sirens sounded in Jordan's Mafraq and Aqaba governorates, and Kuwait and Bahrain reported Iranian drones overhead, as Iran launched retaliatory attacks on US interests in the region.
By the end of the day the exchange appeared limited. Iran fired a salvo of at least eight missiles, most reported intercepted, with no casualties confirmed; the preceding US strike was reported to have killed two. The US energy secretary said 17 million barrels of oil transited the strait that day, described as the highest volume since the conflict began.
