DONETSK OBLAST, UKRAINE

Summer ends on Ukraine's eastern front with Russia's Donbas push stalled

Filed

As the summer fighting season closed, Russian forces had made no strategic gains in Donbas despite months of assaults, analysts said, with advances measured in a few square kilometres at heavy cost in personnel and equipment. Ukrainian units were reported to be counter-attacking in the Dobropillia–Oleksandrivka area north of Pokrovsk. Ukrainian troops have in some cases raised flags at a distance from their actual positions for operational security, which complicates independent mapping of the line. By several open-source estimates Ukraine has recovered slightly more ground than it has lost so far this year — the first time since 2022 — though the totals on both sides remain small. None of the claimed movements has been independently confirmed.
